Hello Verdugo Hills Community! This is Dr. Trimis with your weekly announcements. This week, both Tuesday and Friday are Late-Start Days. Happy Holidays! Hola Verdugo Hills Comunidad! Este es el Dr. Trimis con sus anuncios semanales. Esta semana, tanto los martes y viernes son tardíos-Start Días. ¡Felices vacacio.

As we enter the last week of school before Winter Break, I have to let you know it has been an incredible semester! I am so proud of all that our students have accomplished and all that our teachers and staff have done to support them. And this week was no exception! We had our first ever wrestling match, our Army JROTC did an amazing job at the annual Drill Competition, and so many classes spent so much time decorating their doors for our holiday decorating contest! I continue to be impressed with the creativity, work ethic, and brilliance of our school community!

This week we will have our Winter Concert on Thursday night at 6:30 pm. I hope you can enjoy us for an evening of music making featuring all of our instrumental and vocal ensembles and soloists. Please come out to support our Winter athletes. Game information is posted on our website. And, lastly, this is the last week of the semester. Grades are due from the teachers and report cards will be mailed home after the last day of school, Friday. We will be off for three weeks, returning to school on January 11. This will also be the last weekly announcement until then. Check our website for news updates at www.verdugophs.org, “like” us on Facebook, and “follow us” on Twitter, both linked on the website. Special Holiday Messsage

A message from VERDUGO HILLS SENIOR HIGH

25 Nov 2015

This is Dr. Trimis with a special holiday message.

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag ([wahm-puh-noh-ag] )Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. Pilgrims held their second Thanksgiving celebration in 1623 to mark the end of a long drought that had threatened the year’s harvest and prompted Governor Bradford to call for a religious fast. Days of fasting and thanksgiving on an annual or occasional basis became common practice in other New England settlements as well. During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress designated one or more days of thanksgiving a year, and in 1789 George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation by the national government of the United States; in it, he called upon Americans to express their gratitude for the happy conclusion to the country’s war of independence and the successful ratification of the U.S. Constitution. His successors John Adams and James Madison also designated days of thanks during their presidencies. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

Tomorrow, November 26, 2015 is Thanksgiving Day. At Verdugo and in Los Angeles, we truly have so much to be thankful for. Please enjoy the day with your family and friends. We return to school on Monday, November 30, 2015 and it is a regular day.

15 Nov 2015

This is Dr. Trimis with a few announcements. Tuesday is a late-start day.

Hola Comunidad Verdugo Hills. Este es el Dr. Trimis con algunos anuncios. El martes es un día de retraso de arranque.

This was a great weekend for our Verdugo students involved in the arts and related activities. Our Cyber Patriot Team had their first competition on Saturday, the Fall Play, The Iliad, the Odyssey, and All Greek Mythology in 99 Minutes or Less had a great opening night on Friday and another great performance on Saturday, our Dons Battalion JROTC team had a successful color guard competition Saturday following their nearly perfect inspection last week, and our Dons Marching Band and Color Guard did an amazing job in their first competition of the year, with Drumline winning 2nd Place, Color Guard winning 1st Place, and Band with Color Guard winning First Place! Congratulations to all!

Unfortunately, global news this week has not been as joyous. The world has been shocked by the 43 dead in the terrorist attacks in Beirut on Thursday the over 129 dead in the terrorist attacks in Paris two days later. In these times of sadness, it is important we all support each other as a community and each family draws close to appreciate each other, to try to be compassionate for the victims, and do their best to make sense of what is in actuality a senseless tragedy for all. School is in session all week, but in support of the victims and their families of the attacks, we will be lowering our flag to half-staff. Please note we have counselors and other staff available to support students who need help in what can be difficult times as these.

Thank you and see you at school.

Take Care,

Dr. Edward Trimis, Principal

Special Veteran's Day Message 11-10-15

November 10th , 2015

10 November 2015

Good evening Verdugo Hills community. This is Dr. Trimis with a special announcement, taken, in part, from President Obama’s 2014 Veteran’s Day proclamation.

Since the birth of our Nation, American patriots have stepped forward to serve our country and defend our way of life. With honor and distinction, generations of servicemen and women have taken up arms to win our independence, preserve our Union, and secure our freedom. From the Minutemen to our Post-9/11 Generation, these heroes have put their lives on the line so that we might live in a world that is safer, freer, and more just, and we owe them a profound debt of gratitude. On Veterans Day, we salute the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen who have rendered the highest service any American can offer, and we rededicate ourselves to fulfilling our commitment to all those who serve in our name.

This day, and every day, we pay tribute to America's sons and daughters who have answered our country's call. We recognize the sacrifice of those who have been part of the finest fighting force the world has ever known and the loved ones who stand beside them. With respect for and in recognition of the contributions our service members have made to the cause of peace and freedom around the world, the Congress has provided that November 11 of each year shall be set aside as a legal public holiday to honor our Nation's veterans.

On a personal note, though I never had the opportunity to serve our nation as a serviceman, I can’t be more proud of my two sons who are both active military. To them and to all who have answered the call, I salute you and I thank you.

Verdugo Hills High School and other LAUSD schools and offices are closed tomorrow in honor of Veteran’s Day. Please enjoy the time with friends and family. Thursday and Friday are regular school days
